THE LOWDOWN

World number four Daniil Medvedev has voiced his dislike for clay-court tennis for many years on tour, calling himself something of a hardcourt specialist, but an incredible run to the Italian Open title this time last season re-wrote the script. The 28-year-old completed his career set of surfaces with victory in Rome, beating Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune en-route to his 20th ATP title and a sixth Masters title overall, but he has failed to win a trophy since; losing each of his last five including two Grand Slams at the US Open last summer and from two sets up against Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open this January.

Additionally, Medvedev has yet to successfully defend a title on tour, one of the odder quirks of his illustrious career, and it is a surprise to see him take part at all after a freak injury in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open last Thursday saw him have to retire against Jiri Lehecka.

THE PREDICTION

The likelihood of Medvedev repeating his brilliant feat from last season is small but there is a big opportunity to do so with two of his biggest competitors, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, absent from the draw. World number 40 Jack Draper has improved his performances on clay in recent weeks to blast past former number 12 Borna Coric in straight sets on Thursday, earning his chance at a huge upset here in Rome. A first meeting with Medvedev could be an epic on hardcourts, or even grass, but clay is neither player’s favoured arena and experience in these conditions should end up the defining factor on Saturday.

The doubts surrounding Medvedev’s injury make keeping this match out of an accumulator the wisest move here but otherwise back the Russian to start his defence with a win. You could add at least a tiebreak for good measure here, with two of the tougher serves to break meeting each other for the first time on tour.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN
