THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Tommy Paul stunned defending champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Tuesday, avenging a tight defeat to the Russian in the semi-finals of Indian Wells back in March. The 26-year-old had struggled to get back on the horse after losing from a set up in their previous encounter but such a convincing response yesterday sets out his stall as a serious dark horse for the title in Rome, alongside next opponent Hubert Hurkacz.

World number nine Hurkacz has thoroughly improved his stock on clay in recent weeks, winning his first title on the surface at the Estoril Open last month before exits to top 15 players in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. Back-to-back victories over clay aficionados Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Sebastian Baez, coming back from a set down via a second-set tiebreak, complement his blistering performance against Rafael Nadal last week and he has the better experience at Masters level as a two-time champion – most recently in Shanghai last October.

The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but Paul won their most recent encounter in three sets at Indian Wells last March. Back Hurkacz to earn at least a set, as he has in both of their encounters, to leave the victor up to chance. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak with each of the Pole’s last two matches seeing one.

TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN A SET
