THE LOWDOWN

HUBERT HURKACZ

World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz won a first Masters title last season at the Miami Open and after some fluctuations in his form he bettered that feat with a stunning run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon. The 24-year-old Pole is an infectious talent on court with a world class net game that could serve him well on grass in years to come, with his famous straight-sets win over Roger Federer in SW19 evidence to that point. Hurkacz has never made it past the second round in Melbourne but he looks a dark horse for a deep run this time around if he gets a decent draw.

EGOR GERASIMOV

World number 106 Egor Gerasimov set a career-high ATP world ranking of 65th in the world back in 2020 but he struggled for consistency throughout last season as fellow Belarussian Ilya Ivashka surpassed him. The 29-year-old is a powerful opponent well capable of the occasional shock, with a straight-sets victory over world number 40 Marton Fucsovics last week more like his 2020 form. Gerasimov has reached the second round in both of his Australian Open main draw campaigns so far.

THE PREDICTION

Hubert Hurkacz has exactly the right game for a deep run in Melbourne and the popular Pole would deserve nothing less after some stunning displays last season. The 24-year-old beat Egor Gearsimov in straight sets in their only previous meeting which also came in the first round of a Grand Slam at last year’s US Open and that seems a solid enough benchmark for what happens here. Straight-set picks are always a risk in the first round of a major tournament but Hurkacz should be taking this in three in his current form.
