HUBERT HURKACZ
26-year-old Hubert Hurkacz could set a new career-high ATP world ranking as high as seventh if he can reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open but he is in uncharted waters in Melbourne already after making the last eight for the first time with an excellent straight-sets win over Arthur Cazaux. The Pole burst into form late last season to win a second Masters title in Shanghai but it remained to be seen how he coped this fortnight after a capitulation against Alexander Zverev in the United Cup finals essentially handed the title to Germany three weeks ago. Hurkacz’s best Grand Slam showing so far was a tight exit to Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals at Wimbledon back in 2021.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number three Daniil Medvedev played well in a tough fourth round clash with in-form Nuno Borges on Monday, dropping the third set but coming back strongly to close the match. The 27-year-old finished runner-up here in successive seasons, first to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then to Rafael Nadal in that historic five-set thriller two years ago, and he has reached four major finals overall, losing to Nadal at the US Open in 2019 but beating Djokovic two years later to claim his maiden Grand Slam trophy.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a fierce and hopefully thrilling clash between two huge servers with the hand skills to back it up. World number nine Hurkacz leads their head-to-head 3-2 after most recently stunning the Russian in a hugely impressive Halle Open final in 2022 but Medvedev has since improved again, enduring something of a fallow period that season, to look the reasonable favourite here. Hurkacz also won their only previous Grand Slam encounter, in five sets en-route to the semi-finals of Wimbledon three years ago, but Medvedev leads 2-1 on hardcourts and his renowned deep returning position is designed to limit the weapons of big servers like the Pole. There has been at least a tiebreak in four of their five encounters so back Medvedev to win outright and add at least a tiebreak here.
