THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov claimed the 400th ATP tour win of his career on Saturday with a straight sets victory over Juan Pablo Varillas. The Bulgarian looks on course for a semi-final showdown with Alexander Zverev, who has already beaten him three times this season, but Christopher O’Connell should not be underestimated after an impressive win in two over Taro Daniel. The Aussie came into Chengdu at a career-high ATP world ranking of 53rd after enjoying a transformative season on tour and he has twice taken sets from Daniil Medvedev, most recently at the US Open, to prove his ability in matches against top talent. Dimitrov beat O’Connell at this stage of the Geneva Open back in May, en-route to his first final since 2018, and he leads the Aussie 2-0 in their head-to-head. Both matches have seen three sets, though, so take the Bulgarian to win outright.
