THE PREDICTION

37-year-old Gilles Simon cancelled his retirement presentation at Roland-Garros for a second time this week after an excellent three-set victory over Steve Johnson. The former world number six will say goodbye to the French Open at some point this campaign after announcing he will retire at the end of the season but an exciting sub-plot is now bubbling nicely here after he stunned the 16th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets on Tuesday and his victory over Johnson was a remarkable 500th on the ATP tour. World number 23 Marin Cilic had to come back from a set down to beat Marton Fucsovics on Thursday and, perhaps insignificantly, the Croat has failed to win three matches on the spin in each of his last eight tournaments – stretching back to a solid run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

What is more significant here is that current world number 158 Simon leads Cilic 6-1 in a surprising head-to-head record. Former world number three Cilic beat the Frenchman in five sets in the round of 16 at the 2014 US Open on his way to that fateful Grand Slam title but Simon has beaten Cilic on all surfaces stretching from a 2007 Wimbledon win through to their most recent encounter on hard at the Pune Open in 2018. It couldn’t happen, could it? Back the Frenchman, with a whole nation behind him on Saturday, to win at least a set here – even two – in a match that could go the distance.
