THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev avoided a potential upset in assured fashion late on Sunday, ousting former number 10 Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to build on a similar opener over former number 12 Borna Coric. The 27-year-old won two of his five Masters titles here in 2018 and 2022 and he should be considered a serious threat to the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in these high altitude clay conditions that match his game so well.

World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo came back from a set down to beat Tommy Paul impressively on Sunday, backing-up a great opener over in-form Fabian Marozsan, but this will be a significantly tougher challenge. The Argentine struggled to find his best tennis for most of the first three months on tour but a three-set exit to Karen Khachanov last time out at Monte-Carlo suggested things were on the mend and he can be pleased with his progress in Madrid. The pair have never met on tour but Zverev should be battle-hardened after two tough fixtures already. Back the German to win outright for caution’s sake in this first encounter.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
