THE PREDICTION
This is a truly fascinating third round clash between two players who are currently far from the level they expect to be, let alone should be. World number 18 Frances Tiafoe leads number 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-2 in their storied head-to-head after winning each of their last two encounters, although their most recent match at the Laver Cup in 2022 should be taken with a pinch of salt as an off-tour clash.
25-year-old Tsitsipas beat Lucas Pouille in straight sets on Friday to avoid an opening upset at Indian Wells but the Greek’s recent defeats to Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud and Alex de Minaur (for the first time in 12 meetings) suggest Tiafoe has a huge chance at turning his poor 2024 around backed, as he certainly will be, by a raucous, partisan atmosphere on Sunday. 26-year-old Tiafoe beat Dusan Lajovic in straight sets to avoid an early upset of his own but he has managed back-to-back wins just once this season, and only twice since his quarter-final exit at the US Open last summer. Back the American to earn at least a set as someone who almost always thrives in blockbuster conditions, leaving a likely three-setter up to chance.
TIP: FRANCES TIAFOE TO WIN A SET
