28-year-old Nicolas Jarry enjoyed the best season of his life last year to bring a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th into the Australian Open. The Chilean won on home clay in Santiago and then again in Geneva but it was his remarkable progress on less-travelled surfaces that make him a serious threat to the top order in 2024, with stand-out performances on grass at Halle and Wimbledon and a rugged approach to hardcourts that says he could break the top 10. World number 102 Flavio Cobolli qualified for his Melbourne debut without dropping a set this week, although he enjoyed a favourable draw, in his first matches since a strong showing at the Next Gen ATP Finals last November. The 21-year-old stands to make great strides on his favoured clay this season but this looks too steep of a challenge against Jarry at present, although the Chilean has started a little sluggishly so far.
