THE LOWDOWN
This is an enormous opportunity for both former number six Felix Auger-Aliassime and current number 31 Jiri Lehecka after the pair were afforded default routes into the semi-finals, with Jannik Sinner handing Auger-Aliassime a walkover and Daniil Medvedev pulling up injured one set in against Lehecka on Wednesday. Both have earned their chances, though, with 23-year-old Auger-Aliassime stunning Barcelona champion Casper Ruud in straight sets in the last 16 and 22-year-old Lehecka spoiling the party in Madrid with an assured performance against Rafael Nadal. The Czech has yet to drop a set in Madrid to produce by far and away his most impressive run on clay and Auger-Aliassime has similarly impressed, not just on his weakest surface but overall, after such a poor spell of form on tour since the start of last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really strange match-up for the semi-final of a prestigious clay court tournament like Madrid and their head-to-head leaves more questions than answers, with Lehecka edging out the Canadian in four sets in his career-best run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last year. That defeat signalled a severe depressurization in confidence for Auger-Aliassime, who struggled to cope with his first real set of injuries in a prodigal career so far, but he will come in well rested and boosted by a big result over a top clay-courter in Ruud to look the slightest favourite on experience at this level. Both big-hitters have been serving seriously well all fortnight so consider taking at least a tiebreak here to leave the result totally up to chance.
TIP: OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS
