THE PREDICTION
This has all the hallmarks of a proper thriller between Rotterdam Open defending champion Andrey Rublev and in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime. World number seven Rublev overcame his oft-faced foe Marton Fucsovics in straight sets for a repeat of last season’s final, with this tournament the most recent of his eight career titles. World number nine Auger-Aliassime has finished runner-up in an astonishing eight tour finals, his most recent against Marin Cilic at the Stuttgart Open last summer. The Canadian has excelled at recent Grand Slams, including reaching the semi-finals of the US Open last season, and he also won the ATP Cup as part of Team Canada last month but taking that first career singles title is proving something of an albatross around his neck. The 21-year-old is improving all the time, though, and he looks the favourite to come through here after beating Andy Murray and Cam Norrie in straight sets over the last few days.
Rublev leads this head-to-head record 2-0 with two three-set victories over the Canadian prodigy but their last meeting came over two years ago. Auger-Aliassime should leapfrog the Russian in the ATP world rankings sooner rather than later this season and he can make that statement of intent by claiming a first victory over Rublev here.
