World number 72 Taylor Townsend came back from a set down to beat Lucia Bronzetti on Tuesday, building on some strong qualifying wins to look a decent threat in this first meeting with Elise Mertens. World number 28 Mertens finished runner-up to Emma Navarro at the Hobart International back in January but after a reasonably drab spell she looked in competitive shape at Indian Wells last week, stunning Naomi Osaka in straight sets en-route to the last 16 and partnering Su-Wei Hsieh to win the Women’s Doubles. 27-year-old Townsend has all the fire and talent to produce a raucous home support in this intriguing clash but Mertens is exactly the sort of player capable of bedding in to weather the storm.
