THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Elise Mertens grabbed an excellent straight-sets opener over Katerina Siniakova on Friday to snap a two-match losing streak on clay. The 28-year-old was edged out of the Madrid Open in three sets by Sloane Stephens two weeks ago but it has taken players of that quality to oust her since the start of the clay swing, with eventual champion Danielle Collins winning their quarter-final in Charleston and a defeat to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart.

Former world number 22 Irina-Camelia Begu avoided a tough draw with defending champion Elena Rybakina on Friday, taking control of her rescheduled clash with lucky loser Oceane Dodon before the lucky loser was also forced to withdraw injured. 33-year-old Begu was competitive in defeat to Madison Keys at this stage of Madrid but, whilst she should be fitter two weeks on, it is still early days in her latest return from injury. Mertens leads their head-to-head 3-1 and she can be backed to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
