THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka moved back up to 229th after a solid run to the third round of Indian Wells last week, although she will be disappointed with a straight-sets exit to Elise Mertens after an impressive result over 14th seed Liudmila Samsonova. The 26-year-old’s return to tour from maternity leave has so far been hugely successful, with her run to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters last month promising something a little better than a third round on the Sunshine Double, but she will be eager for more as a finalist here as recently as 2022 when she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek.
World number 51 Elisabetta Cocciaretto comes into this tough first encounter with Osaka with some strong momentum behind her after winning the Charleston Challenger last weekend, beating up-and-coming Diana Shnaider in the final, but this should be too big of a step-up against a hungry serial champion. Osaka will be eager to make amends for her Indian Wells campaign here in Miami and the fast, humid conditions should suit her simmering game. Back the Japanese to win outright, although straight sets should do it.
TIP: NAOMI OSAKA TO WIN
