THE LOWDOWN

ELENA RYBAKINA

World number 23 Elena Rybakina is quietly going about her business at Wimbledon, emulating her best run here from last season with a strong performance over up-and-comer Qinwen Zheng. The 23-year-old set her best Grand Slam exit in 2020 with a stunning victory over Serena Williams at this stage of Roland-Garros and she is well capable of challenging for the title at SW19 if she maintains her best level. Rybakina set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th earlier this season but injury set her form back until recently.

PETRA MARTIC

World number 80 Petra Martic is much better than her current WTA world ranking suggests and she is proving it with victories over the likes of 30th-seed Shelby Rogers and, most recently, world number nine Jessica Pegula. The 31-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th at the start of 2020 and she looks to have been one of the more adversely affected players by the suspension of the tour during the early stages of the covid-19 pandemic. Martic also set her best Grand Slam showing at Roland-Garros, reaching the quarter-finals in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

This is a really tough call between two tall, powerful servers with plenty of skills to back it up on this surface that suits both well. 31-year-old Petra Martic has vastly more experience than Rybakina but the Kazakh was the winner of their only previous encounter at the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2020 with the Croat at the peak of her powers. It took two tiebreaks for Rybakina to win that semi-final and it could come as tight again here with so much on the line. That looks a really useful alternative to picking a winner here, with at least one tiebreak in each of both players’ three matches so far this campaign. Take at least a tiebreak here and consider adding Rybakina, who is just-about the likelier to come through, to win at least a set.
