This should be a fiercely contested first round clash between two in-form players. World number 89 Laura Siegemund comes in hot from United Cup victory with Germany, partnering fabulously with Alexander Zverev in the final three doubles deciders, whilst world number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova stunned Elena Rybakina, last season’s runner-up here in Melbourne, on Thursday. The 29-year-old went on to lose to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets but wins over Rybakina, Veronika Kudermetova and Magda Linette suggest she is in very strong form coming into Melbourne. However, 35-year-old Siegemund is unbeaten in 2024 after pulling out of the quarter-finals in singles and doubles in Adelaide this week – most likely to maximise her form here in a last-chance saloon situation.
