Former world number 19 Donna Vekic suddenly burst into form at the San Diego Open last October, beating four top 30 players including Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka before a three-set defeat to Iga Swiatek. The 26-year-old can be one of the more erratic players on the WTA tour but she started 2023 off in excellent fashion with three wins from three at the United Cup for Croatia and this looks a kind way to start her Australian Open campaign to get underway. World number 179 Oksana Selekhmeteva qualified with gusto last week to make her Australian Open debut here and she could prove a difficult opponent if Vekic struggles early-on. This time last year this would be a difficult match to back the Croat in but the last few months suggest she can win in straight sets. It would be wise, until we see Vekic start, to leave this match out of an accumulator.
