THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Madison keys enjoyed an excellent return to form last season, reaching the semi-finals of the US Open before a gut-wrenching exit from a set up to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. The 29-year-old returned to tour from an injury lay-off two weeks ago at Indian Wells, winning her opener before a straight-sets defeat to Yulia Putintseva to suggest it may take some time to get back up to speed, but this looks a much tougher first match against up-and-coming Diana Shnaider.

The 19-year-old beat Venus Williams in straight sets on Tuesday to bounce back well from losing the Charleston Challenger final last weekend and she claimed her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships in February, her second final in fewer than six months after finishing runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Ningbo Open. Two very powerful groundstroke games will make for an entertaining clash here but back Shnaider to earn at least a set with the much better recent form in her legs.
