THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating clash between former world number 10 Denis Shapovalov, who has dropped outside of the top 100 after a woeful few seasons on tour, and 18-year-old Jakub Mensik, who qualified handily this week to make his Australian Open debut. The young Czech brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 144th into Melbourne after reaching the Canberra Challenger final last week and he already proved himself a creditable threat at this level with a debut run to the third round at the US Open in September. 24-year-old Shapovalov is a supremely talented player who famously reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2021, losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, as well as quarter-finals at the US Open in 2020 and here two years ago.

The Canadian should come good again one day but it is difficult to see him producing enough consistency to move back inside the top 50 this year.
