THE PREDICTION
This could end up a proper thriller between former world number 10 Denis Shapovalov and current number five Alexander Zverev, the latter of whom leads their storied head-to-head 5-3. 25-year-old Shapovalov brought a hugely deflated ranking of 132nd into Madrid after several seasons of listing form and more recent injury setbacks but he has stunned two serious clay-courters in Facundo Diaz Acosta and Tomas Martin Etcheverry to look a threat in this late-night clash.
Two-time former Madrid champion Zverev’s powerful serve thrives in the high altitude here in Madrid, complementing his excellent clay sensibilities well to make a potent combination in these conditions. The 27-year-old beat Borna Coric in straight sets on Friday to bounce back from a poor exit to Cristian Garin in Munich last week and he has been far from infallible this season, with other surprise exits to the likes of Jordan Thompson and Daniel Altmaier since his run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was up-ended by Daniil Medvedev.
Zverev won the only previous clay meeting with Shapovalov in the semi-finals here en-route to his first title here in 2018 and he claimed their most recent at Halle last summer to remain the pretty solid favourite. Take the suitably cautious outright concession, though, with Shapovalov often flourishing against the better players.
TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
