World number 11 Daria Kasatkina has quietly repaired her troubling, intermittent 2023 form with a series of solid runs so far this season – including reaching two finals in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi. The 26-year-old was in total control of her opening match against Claire Liu before her opponent retired early in the second and she will be eager to at least match her run at Indian Wells this time last week, where she came back from a set down to beat Sloane Stephens to the round of 16 before a tight exit to in-form Yue Yuan.
World number 24 Sorana Cirstea conceded just three games to Stephens on Friday to look a threat here, though, and her remarkable run to the semi-finals here last season bolsters that statement.
