THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka beat a 20-year-old Daria Kasatkina in straight sets to lift the Indian Wells title back in 2018 but this second encounter six years on is the Russian’s to lose on her favoured clay. 10th seed Kasatkina eased past Tatjana Maria on Thursday to get her Rome campaign underway and she recently finished runner-up to Danielle Collins at the Charleston Open, where she won her first of six WTA titles back in 2017, before a tight exit to in-form Yulia Putintseva in Madrid last week. 26-year-old Osaka looks in excellent shape on her typically weakest surface so far, grabbing one of her best wins since her return to tour this season in a straight-sets victory over Stuttgart runner-up Marta Kostyuk. Osaka is yet to drop a set in Rome but she will have to improve her percentages on her potent serve to tackle the more comfortable clay-courters on tour, with Kasatkina’s return game likely to be the eventual difference here. Back Kasatkina to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
