THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling fourth encounter between world number four Daniil Medvedev and number 29 Sebastian Korda, who completely dismantled the Russian in their two meetings last season. 23-year-old Korda is one of the more frustrating players on tour with all the tools and sensibilities to be a top 10 player now, let alone in the future, but he has been rather unfortunate with injuries whilst also, perhaps, struggling a little with complacency at times. The American’s straight-sets victory over Medvedev in the third round of the Australian Open last season was probably the best of his career but an injury against Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals saw his progress scuppered for months afterwards, making his straight-sets win over the Russian in Shanghai last October all the more surprising.
27-year-old Medvedev finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Melbourne this January, proving if proof be needed that he is one of the very best on a hardcourt, but he has been vocal in his dislike for the slower conditions here in the desert. Korda has earned at least a set in each of their three meetings to suggest he can kick-start his 2024 with victory here but he remains one of the more unpredictable on tour. Back the American to earn at least a set, utilising the home crowd where possible, to leave the victor up to chance.
