THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Jiri Lehecka played his game and not the occasion fabulously on Wednesday to beat five-time Madrid champion Rafael Nadal in five sets, likely ending the Spaniard’s last match as a professional on home soil. The 22-year-old has quietly enjoyed his best campaign on clay with three straight-set wins on the spin and he can maintain his fierce serving, with Nadal failing to break him on Tuesday, this could go down to the wire against fellow hard-court enthusiast Daniil Medvedev.

World number four Medvedev has also impressed in conditions he has often vocalised a disliking for, although the high altitude in Madrid softens the blow, or more softens the softening, that more typical clay courts have on the harder-hitting players. The 28-year-old overcame Alexander Bublik in straight sets on Tuesday to back-up an excellent three-set comeback over Sebastian Korda and he remains the favourite here as the reigning Italian Open champion with far more experience in these conditions. Medvedev was in control of their previous match at Wimbledon last summer before Lehecka, who had just upset Tommy Paul in five sets, was forced off with blisters but this should be a much closer clash. Take Medvedev to win outright.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN
