THE PREDICTION

World number four Daniil Medvedev passed a significant test on Monday with a three-set victory over Sebastian Korda, who despite recent struggles on tour had led the Russian 2-1 with a real blueprint for causing trouble in their match-up. 28-year-old Medvedev has struggled to find his best tennis since a gruelling run to the Australian Open final in January, where he finished runner-up for the third time in four years, from two sets up against Jannik Sinner but a run to the final here last season suggests he is the dark horse behind the Italian and defending champion Alcaraz this week.

World number 13 Grigor Dimitrov is another player with some recent success against the Russian, though, with a comeback over Medvedev en-route to the Paris Masters final last November reducing his deficit to 3-6 in their head-to-head. The 32-year-old also came back to beat Medvedev in three at this exact stage of Indian Wells three years ago to look good for an upset here but two winnable straight-sets wins so far here in the desert, following a short break through injury on tour, gives little away about his overall level. Since Dimitrov’s resurgent form last summer the pair have played out two three-set matches with a win apiece, making the sensible move here backing Medvedev to earn at least a set – as he has in all nine of their encounters – to leave the result up to chance.
