THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz retained his place as world number two by snapping Jannik Sinner’s remarkable 19-match winning streak from a set down on Saturday. The 20-year-old had struggled to find anything like his best tennis since that era-defining five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final last summer but a return to the desert, where he found the peak of his powers last season, looks to have recalibrated him just in time to enjoy a rip-roaring clay swing. World number four Daniil Medvedev also came back from a set down to beat Tommy Paul on Saturday but he looks the significant underdog in this potential thriller after coming off comfortably second best to Alcaraz in this final last season. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open in January but he has looked, in parts, a little jaded since and it is quite likely that his head goes down if Alcaraz starts fast here – particularly as the Indian Wells crowd will back the popular Spaniard to the hilt.
Alcaraz leads Medvedev 3-2 in their storied head-to-head but he won three of their four encounters last season, with Medvedev ousting the Spaniard in three sets to reach the US Open final in hardcourt conditions he much prefers. The slower hardcourts at Indian Wells suit the likes of Iga Swiatek and Alcaraz’ clay sensibilities and the pair look set to win their respective finals today. Straight sets should do it for Alcaraz but an outright win is the sensible call.
