THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling late night clash between defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and red-hot Danielle Collins, who brings a 14-match winning streak after two tough comebacks so far. The 30-year-old has played like a woman possessed ever since announcing that 2024 will be her last season as a tennis professional and she could stop now with her head held high after claiming a maiden Masters title at home in Miami and backing it up in Charleston earlier this month. The American has spent her career struggling with debilitating injuries, though, and her two previous titles came back-to-back in 2021 to suggest she is throwing everything she has into maintaining this current peak for fear she may not get back to it.

Collins’ two battling wins over qualifier Olga Danilovic and Jaqueline Cristian further suggest that the fight is there but that the level is dropping, at least for now, to make world number two Sabalenka the reasonable favourite here. The 25-year-old has also edged through two surprisingly tough three-setters in Madrid but after a period of low energy on tour, following her brilliant defence of the Australian Open title, she looks to be using this second defence as motivation to get back on track. Sabalenka has won all four of their previous meetings on tour, knocking the American out of three US Opens, to make taking her to earn at least a set the suitably cautious way to avoid a result here. Two of their matches have seen sets go both ways, though, and given their campaigns so far this could be the shrewd way to stay neutral.
