THE PREDICTION

World number 57 Daniel Altmaier has all the weapons required to reach a ranking far higher than his current one and he proved that once again on Tuesday, stunning fellow German Alexander Zverev in three sets. The 25-year-old will assume Zverev’s top seed draw from here on in to suggest he could enjoy one of the bigger weeks of his career but world number 53 Miomir Kecmanovic is similarly qualified for higher echelons in the sport to make this a likely thriller in Acapulco. The 24-year-old came back from a set down to oust an out-of-sorts Diego Schwartzman on Tuesday, snapping a three-match losing streak stretching back to an excellent run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where he stunned both Jan-Lennard Struff and Tommy Paul in five sets before defeat to Carlos Alcaraz.

A lack of consistency has been both of these players’ downfalls so far in their careers, with Altmaier failing push on from his remarkable victory over Jannik Sinner at Roland-Garros last summer, and that makes this match a tough result to call. The confidence of ousting Zverev probably edges this Altmaier’s way but back the German to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, with Kecmanovic winning their only previous encounter on clay two years ago.

TIP: DANIEL ALTMAIER TO WIN A SET
