THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Karen Khachanov has been a dependable high-performer at Grand Slams in recent seasons despite struggling to maintain a consistent bill of clean health. The 27-year-old reached back-to-back major semi-finals at the US Open in 2022 and here last season, losing in four sets apiece to Casper Ruud in New York and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Melbourne, and he finally broke his title duck late on last year with a first trophy since 2018 claimed at the Zhuhai Championships. This is no gimme for the Russian, though, especially as he lost his only match of 2024 in three sets to Emil Ruusuvuori in Hong Kong last week. World number 57 Daniel Altmaier is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests, even away from his favoured clay, and it would not be a surprise to see him take this first encounter with Khachanov all the way.
Altmaier upset Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in Auckland on Tuesday but he pulled up injured against Arthur Fils in the quarter-finals to throw some doubt over this clash. Take the cautious approach here, in that case, by backing Khachanov to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable victors.
