THE LOWDOWN

This should be a thrilling Group A decider between Czechia and the USA who both handed defending champions Switzerland 3-0 defeats this week. Czechia did so in impressive circumstances as former world number two Barbora Krejcikova did not return from the WTA Finals in time to play twice, later joining up with partner Katerina Siniakova to win the doubles match, to see 18-year-old Linda Noskova cope well under pressure in a three-set opening victory. It is likely that Krejcikova comes back in as Czech number one today, seeing Marie Bouzkova pushed back to second option, and that should make for a thrilling day in this would-be BJK Cup final. If, however, Captain Petr Pala can bring in world number six Marketa Vondrousova, who has struggled with injuries in recent months, the Czech’s look unstoppable.

The USA have a lot of options at their disposal as perhaps the most stacked BJK Cup finalist here. Former world number nine Danielle Collins has endured a tough season overall but she played predictably well as second option on Thursday, ousting Switzerland’s Celine Naef, before former number four Sofia Kenin overcame a spirited Viktorija Golubic in three tight sets. Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend looked in their element as a doubles duo, something we would like to see more of in 2024, to see the Americans through 3-0 and with one set conceded – identical to Czechia’s record so far.

THE PREDICTION

If Czechia can put out world number six Marketa Vondrousova and number 10 Barbora Krejcikova on Friday there is very little this slightly underpowered USA team can do. The Americans are missing their top three ranked players in Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys but they still have plenty of strength in depth and two of the fiercest scrappers on tour in Collins and Kenin. Former world number four Kenin would especially like a crack at facing Krejcikova, which is likely if Vondrousova is not fit to play, in the first option match after she finished runner-up to the Czech in San Diego back in August but Marie Bouzkova could yet come in as first option and she breezed past Kenin in their only previous tour-level meeting in Dubai back in February.

There is too much guesswork involved in these line-ups to make a sensible call before the line-ups are announced but Czechia’s doubles duo of Krejcikova and Siniakova is nailed on and they will more than likely face Taylor Townsend and Sloane Stephens, with the Czechs likely winners there. For that reason, back Czechia to edge through this contest on the face of it or wait for the line-ups before making you decision. If Czechia can play Vondrousova and Krejcikova this match may not even require doubles.

BETTING TIP: CZECHIA TO WIN.
