World number 140 Coco Vandeweghe claimed a deciding tiebreak 10-1 in her final qualifying match against Yuriko Miyazaki to take some real momentum into the first round of the Australian Open. The former world number nine reached the semi-finals here back in 2017, also making the semis at the US Open and the quarters at Wimbledon that year, but she has managed just two wins at Grand Slams since the start of 2018 due to a recurring ankle injury. World number 40 Anhelina Kalinina rose to prominence on the clay swing last season and she will be eager to get back to her best on her favoured surface as soon as possible. The 25-year-old is capable on all surfaces, though, with a run to the quarter-finals of the Hobart International this week ended in three sets by Sofia Kenin. A first tour-level meeting between the two should ultimately go the Ukrainian’s way but Vandeweghe’s method of qualification suggests this match could see three sets. Take that option on its own or back Kalinina to win outright, with this potential upset best left out of an accumulator.
