World number 80 Christopher O’Connell set a career-high of 78th late last season after a run to the semi-finals of the San Diego Open was ended in straight sets by eventual champion Brandon Nakashima. The 28-year-old produced the best run of his career here last season to make the third round, stunning 13th seed Diego Schwartzman in three sets in the second round before a four-set defeat to Maxime Cressy. O’Connell fares a decent chance at another upset here against one of the more unpredictable players on tour in Jenson Brooksby. The 22-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Auckland Classic last week before defeat to Cam Norrie but his form was erratic in 2022, with his last semi-final exit in Seoul followed by three-straight defeats. O’Connell beat Brooksby, a future top 20 player in the making, in three sets in San Diego and the Aussie will be well-backed by a partisan atmosphere on Tuesday – something Brooksby has occasionally struggled to play in. The American remains the favourite to win on ability but back O’Connell to earn at least a set here.
