THE PREDICTION
Former world number six Gael Monfils fought back bravely to beat an improving Cam Norrie on Monday, backing-up an excellent performance over eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz. The 37-year-old initially struggled on his return from injury last summer but he sprung into life on the August Masters double in Cincinnati and Toronto, where he also upset Norrie alongside Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas, to suggest the conditions suit him best in this intriguing clash with world number nine Casper Ruud.
25-year-old Ruud has vastly improved his hardcourt from after a disappointing 2023 on the surface but this looks set to be his toughest match at Indian Wells yet after two solid straight-sets results over Lukas Klein and Arthur Fils. The Norwegian brings some excellent form into the desert after reaching back-to-back finals on Mexican hardcourts in Los Cabos and Acapulco but Monfils should not be underestimated after some huge performances. The Frenchman won their only previous encounter ack in 2018, on clay, to make this something of a clean slate. Back Ruud to win at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable quarter-finalists.
