THE LOWDOWN
World number two Carlos Alcaraz brings a 63-10 record for the season into his ATP Finals debut one year on from missing his initial qualification through injury. The 20-year-old is far from at his best right now after similarly running out of steam over the last few months but he has the second-most wins on tour behind Daniil Medvedev and a second Grand Slam title to his name after he stunned Novak Djokovic in five ere-defining sets at Wimbledon in July. Alcaraz was upset by Roman Safiullin early at the Paris Masters last week but he should be better for it in Turin having played just eight times since defeat to Medvedev in the semi-finals of the US Open.
World number eight Alexander Zverev has fought back successfully from his horrendous injury at Roland-Garros last summer but he is still some way back from his previous best. The 26-year-old is a two-time ATP Finals champion from 2018 and 2020 but he has won just two titles since his most recent success in Turin’s inaugural season two years ago. Zverev comes in under a cloud after further allegations and charges were made about his off-court behaviour and that should see him the villain of the piece in all of his matches this week.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough call on current form with former number two Alexander Zverev and current number two Carlos Alcaraz both a little under par. The pair share a finely-poised head-to-head at 3-3 but Alcaraz has won each of their last two encounters incredibly comfortably, with Zverev’s last victory over the Spaniard preceding his horror injury against Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer. Alcaraz has looked a little jaded on hardcourts practically ever since his remarkable Wimbledon win but Zverev’s recent defeats to Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in similar conditions suggest the German is vulnerable too. Back Alcaraz to earn at least a set but the Spaniard should be able to dig deeper on his ATP Finals debut.
