THE LOWDOWN
Canada put in a huge display of team spirit on Wednesday to beat hosts Spain 3-0, including a mammoth near-three hour straight-sets victory for Leylah Fernandez over Sara Sorribes Tormo. World number 35 Fernandez recently won her third WTA title at the Hong Kong Open to show for her steady progression back towards her best and her battling result over Sorribes Tormo was reminiscent of her efforts en-route to the US Open final two years ago. 18-year-old Marina Stakusic came into the BJK Cup at a career-high WTA world ranking of 258th after some excellent recent work on the ITF circuit and she thoroughly impressed on her debut against a poor Rebeka Masarova, suggesting that captain Heidi El Tabakh could stick with her line-up for this kinder fixture against Poland – including a rare cameo by former world number five Eugenie Bouchard in doubles alongside Gabriela Dabrowski.
Poland will be severely limited without their icon Iga Swiatek, who returned to world number one this week after winning the WTA Finals on Monday, but Magda Linette came into serious form at the BJK Cup last year to offer some hope. The Pole stunned both Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova this time last season in form that saw her produced a career-best run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January but the current world number 24 brings very little form into Seville. 25-year-old Magdalena Frech brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 63rd into the tournament after enjoying a strong summer on grass and she won an ITF title late last month to suggest she could be Poland’s saviour up first as second option. Katarzyna Kawa and Weronika Falkowska make for a durable doubles duo but it would not be a surprise to see Linette or Frech drafted in for a live decider.
THE PREDICTION
Canada’s 3-0 whitewash of Spain set the tone for their BJK Cup campaign as one of the favourites along with North American rivals USA. Magdalena Frech has a strong chance at getting Poland in front if she can continue her strong vein of form but Leylah Fernandez should have too much for Magda Linette, whose confidence has looked a bit shot for much of the second-half of 2023. A live doubles decider would be interesting here, with doubles world number 20 Fernandez likely drafted in to shore up their chances, but it would not be a surprise to see Canada turn the screw in key moments to win both singles.
