THE LOWDOWN
This is certainly the correct final of the week in Seville between the two unbeaten teams with buckets of charisma. Canada are through to their first ever Billie Jean King Cup Final after an incredible effort by world number 35 Leylah Fernandez, who beat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in three tight sets on Saturday before partnering with Gabriela Dabrowski in a thrilling underdog victory over top pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. Fernandez’s victory over Vondrousova was the Czech’s first ever loss in this competition and a first top 10 result for the Canadian since she beat three en-route to the US Open final in 2021.
Italy’s singles players have won all three of their matches so far with opening world number 43 Martina Trevisan setting the tone for number 30 Jasmine Paolini to ply her renowned scrappiness against the likes of Caroline Garcia. It seems likely that the pair will be called upon in a doubles decider with Canada if required but the likes of Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Lucia Bronzetti and Lucrezia Stefanini have all reached their respective career-high WTA world rankings this season in a strong year for Italian tennis.
THE PREDICTION
Canada captain Heidi El Tabakh has some serious decision-making to do here with Marina Stakusic looking a little out of her depth for the first time yesterday. The 18-year-old has impressed in spades this week but it could be bordering on cruel to send her out in Canada’s first ever world cup final against in-form Trevisan. The gamble would be opting for former number five Eugenie Bouchard, who despite recent poor seasons and long absences from tour is undeniably a big-game player, but Trevisan holds positive records over both Bouchard and potential third option Rebecca Marino to put the onus on Leylah Fernandez in the second match. Luckily for Canada, a fit and firing Fernandez thrives in these conditions and she has never conceded a set to Jasmine Paolini in their two matches played so far.
It is likely, then, that we see a thrilling doubles decider between two spirited, deserving champion sides. Leylah Fernandez is the highest-ranked doubles player in this clash, with the highest career-high in singles too, and her star power should be the difference alongside a talented doubles partner in Dabrowski. Italy’s strength in depth has brought them this far but as of yet they lack a real stand-out figurehead. Back Leylah Fernandez to haul Canada over the line.
