THE PREDICTION
This promises to be another thrilling clash between compatriots and burgeoning tour rivals as world number 15 Tommy Paul and number 16 Ben Shelton face off for the fourth time in two seasons. 26-year-old Paul edged Shelton out of his dream Australian Open debut run to the quarter-finals last January but Shelton returned the favour in the round of 16 at the US Open en-route to his own Grand Slam semi-final exit. Both of those clashes fell in four sets but Shelton later beat Paul, who had admittedly gone off the boil a little by the latter stages of last season, in straight sets en-route to his maiden ATP title at the Tokyo Open in October to lead their head-to-head record 2-1.
Paul is yet to drop a set this week in Dallas whilst Shelton had to come back from a set down to oust in-form Jordan Thompson to suggest there is still some of the fragility in his game that saw him edged out by Adrian Mannarino in Melbourne last month. Shelton has earned at least a set in each of their three encounters to offer a suitably cautious way to avoid the result here but at this moment in time it feels like Paul has the mental edge.
TIP: BEN SHELTON TO WIN A SET
