World number nine Anett Kontaveit won the Kremlin Cup late last year in the best purple patch of her career and she looks well on her way to winning again in Russia as the St. Petersburg Open second seed. The 26-year-old has taken out two tough foes in Jil Teichmann and in-form Sorana Cirstea so far but world number 24 Belinda Bencic will be her toughest yet this week. The 24-year-old former world number four has performed well so far in St. Petersburg despite admitting to still feeling the long-term effects of covid-19 that could explain her slow start to the year.
At this moment in time Kontaveit remains one of the most in-form women on tour and Bencic would have to beat the Estonian for a first time if she is to reach the semi-finals here.
