BARBORA KREJCIKOVA
Former world number two Barbora Krejcikova fought back from a set down to oust Mirra Andreeva on Sunday, avenging defeats to the rising Russian star at Wimbledon last summer and in Beijing more recently. The 28-year-old had been a seasoned doubles star for years before her singles game suddenly blossomed in 2021, where she won both singles and doubles titles at Roland-Garros. Victory at the Dubai Masters last spring was proof of her all-court efficacy but she has struggled for consistency ever since, with Sunday’s win her third from a set down already this fortnight.
ARYNA SABALENKA
World number two Aryna Sabalenka is so far defending her maiden Grand Slam title claimed here last season about as fiercely as possible. The 25-year-old came back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina to the title 12 months ago but she has barely dropped a game so far this time around, conceding just 11 in four matches to look the clear favourite amidst so many upsets elsewhere. Sabalenka has reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last major appearances but there is one player left in this draw who could scupper her chances in Coco Gauff, who came back from a set down to stun the Belarussian in the US Open final last September.
THE PREDICTION
Barbora Krejcikova’s no-nonsense, clean ball-striking can be a hugely frustrating leveller for many top players on tour but she looks set to lose this quarter-finals to peak Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarussian leads their head-to-head 5-1 after winning each of their last three matches, although Krejcikova did oust her en-route to that Dubai Masters title last February, and the defending champion looks imperious at this moment in time. Three of their six matches have seen sets go both ways but Krejcikova should not be afforded the time nor space to come back from a set down for a fourth time this campaign. Back Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
