THE LOWDOWN
Australia captain Alicia Molik has some tough decisions to make after Ajla Tomljanovic fell short against Kaja Juvan on Tuesday, with an out-of-sorts Daria Saville losing in similar fashion to Tamara Zidansek. Kimberly Birrell is actually the top Australian on tour right now with more wins than the pair put together in 2023 and she teamed up well with Storm Hunter – fresh off the plane from the WTA Finals – to claim a potentially vital doubles point in a 1-2 defeat. Hunter reached the semi-finals of the WTA Finals doubles alongside Elise Mertens on Sunday to finish 2023 as world number one and she could be pivotal once again in this huge clash.
Kazakhstan lack the strength in depth to win many doubles deciders this week in Seville but they may not need to if singles options Elena Rybakina, the highest-ranked player here at world number four, and Yulia Putintseva put in their best tennis. 24-year-old Rybakina failed to make the semi-finals at the WTA Finals on her debut last week to give her a decent amount of time to make the journey to Seville and that should see her ready to compete, with very few players here capable of beating the 2022 Wimbledon champion at full strength. World number 69 Putintseva set a career-high WTA world ranking of 27th in 2017 and she can occasionally reach those heights on tour, albeit erratically and totally unpredictably.
THE PREDICTION
It is tough to call this tie without reading Australia captain Alicia Molik’s mind but with a first option loss to Elena Rybakina pretty much nailed-on it makes little sense to drop Ajla Tomljanovic now. The 32-year-old has played just three tour-level matches this season after struggling with injuries but she possesses the serve and wingspan to trouble the Kazakh, taking a set from her in a tight defeat in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last summer. Kimberly Birrell has earned her chance to come in as first option but it would offer little use against Rybakina, so dropping Daria Saville for Birrell could allow Tomljanovic to play at first on a protected ranking – freeing up Birrell to face Yulia Putintseva up first. If the Aussie pair are not switched out, back Kazakhstan to win before doubles can make a difference with Rybakina too strong for anyone and Putintseva likely to oust Daria Saville. If, however, Australia can somehow snatch a singles win they can be backed to seal the deal in doubles under the steady hand of Storm Hunter.
