The 28-year-old is arguably at his best on a hardcourt, on which he finished runner-up at Adelaide 2 last season, and he brings reasonable recent form into the tournament after outlasting Matteo Berrettini at the US Open – exiting the third round in four sets to Andrey Rublev. World number 18 Lorenzo Musetti needed three sets to beat qualifier Philip Sekulic on Saturday but a bagel in the third set did at least suggest the Italian is eager to address his poor recent form.
