THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Matteo Arnaldi brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th into the Miami Open after an excellent past few months on tour, most notably helping Italy to a historic Davis Cup title last November. The up-and-coming Italian took he only set from Carlos Alcaraz’ excellent run to the Indian Wells title last time out and he leads fellow youngster, albeit four years his junior, Arthur Fils with the much better recent form behind him to look the favourite.
World number 37 Fils is coming up to the anniversary of his maiden ATP title claimed at the Lyon Open on clay but he has impressed on hardcourts too as he continues to build on an excellent if slightly raw game. The Frenchman grabbed two eye-catching results at Indian Wells before a consummate defeat to Casper Ruud last week but it was a much-improved campaign on recent poor showings on clay to suggest he could be working his way back from the disappointment of losing the Next Gen ATP Finals last November. Arnaldi came out on top of their five-set thriller at the US Open last season so back the Italian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
