Former world number one Victoria Azarenka beat in-form Jelena Ostapenko for the third time this season, and for the third tournament on the spin, before losing her subsequent match – also for the third successive time. The 34-year-old is the only player to have beaten Ostapenko this year, creating a truly odd stat that could continue this week if the pair end up meeting in the quarter-finals. Azarenka was well beaten by eventual champion Iga Swiatek on Thursday but she should be able to bounce back solidly here against Arantxa Rus, who brings two-match losing streak into Dubai after suffering two tight defeats in recent weeks. 33-year-old Rus has enjoyed a strong start to 2024, though, to suggest this could come a lot tighter than their only previous encounter way back in 2012 when Azarenka was at the peak of her powers.
