THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Sloane Stephens is one of the most talented, streakiest players on tour, capable of blasting anyone aside on her day but just as easily falling by the wayside in a winnable fixture. The 30-year-old has so far gone under the radar at the Australian Open but with so many seeds dropping from the draw she should be considered a credible dark horse after a comeback over Daria Kasatkina on Thursday. The 2017 US Open champion reached the semi-finals in Melbourne over a decade ago in 2013 but she has, notably, never lost a third round match here with four first round exits on the spin since her last foray into the second week in 2019.
World number 75 Anna Kalinskaya set her career-best Grand Slam exit in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer and she looks ready to get back to that previous best after struggling with injuries in the second-half of 2023. A three-set defeat to Kasatkina in Adelaide last week suggests that Stephens could turn the screw here but the pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record in which Kalinskaya has won at least a set in each. Back the Russian to continue that streak here to leave the victor up to chance.
