ANNA KALINSKAYA
25-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will break inside the top 40 on tour for the first time after a brilliant maiden run to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam here in Melbourne. The Russian had never made it past the second round at a major before this week but she has been threatening form like this for some time, briefly playing out of skin on the early clay swing last year before injury scuppered her progress. Kalinskaya came back from a set down to oust 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the third round and she backed that up with an assured straight-sets result over Jasmine Paolini on Monday.
QINWEN ZHENG
21-year-old Qinwen Zheng made short work of Oceane Dodin on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the second-successive time, matching her excellent run to the last eight at the US Open last season. The Chinese rising star can break inside the top 10 for the first time if she wins here and Barbora Krejcikova loses to defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, with her ranking enjoying a huge boost late last year with titles picked up in Palermo and Zhengzhou. Zheng won Gold at the Asian Games to further cement her crown as China’s biggest prospect in tennis and she has her sights set on emulating her hero, Li Na, who won the title here a decade ago.
THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Qinwen Zheng is the clear favourite to reach the semi-finals on paper but there have been very few matches this fortnight in which data, or even sense, has prevailed. Whilst world number 75 Anna Kalinskaya’s dream run to the quarter-finals has been kinder than most, avoiding both Elena Rybakina and Daria Kasatkina thanks to het foes’ previous results, the Russian has exhibited a serious ceiling within the last 12 months when she stunned Rybakina at the Madrid Open last spring. 21-year-old Zheng looks confident at what is the closest she has to a home slam here in Melbourne and there is a small drop of fate in the air 10 years on from her idol Li Na’s victory over Dominika Cibulkova. Kalinskaya beat Zheng in three sets at the Guadalajara Open two years ago but the Chinese has come on leaps and bounds since then. Take Zheng to win outright, with three sets likelier than two.
