THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber came back from a set down to stun 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko on Friday, a simply remarkable result in only her fifth tournament back from maternity leave. The 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion was ranked outside the top 600 coming into Indian Wells but her first back-to-back wins since 2022 will see her move inside the top 450 as things stand and her plight for more will be backed to the hilt as a popular tour veteran.
World number 19 Veronika Kudermetova beat Nao Hibino in straight sets on Friday to get a decent foothold in the draw but her poor start to 2024 certainly leaves the door open for another huge result for Kerber. The German may struggle with the physicality of a third match in succession, although she built up some match fitness at the United Cup in January, but beating an in-form Ostapenko would make any player a factor this fortnight. Kudermetova should have too much in this first meeting between the two based on the Russian’s results so far this season back Kerber to earn at least a set as the better-suited to these conditions.
TIP: ANGELIQUE KERBER TO WIN A SET
