THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating and likely thrilling 16th edition of one of the best rivalries on the WTA tour throughout the past decade. Two former number ones in 36-year-old Angelique Kerber and 33-year-old Caroline Wozniacki have both recently returned to tour, Kerber from maternity leave and Wozniacki from retirement, in recent months and they will face off for the first time since 2018 – where Wozniacki won in three tight sets to pull just one behind the German in a finely poised 8-7 head-to-head. Wozniacki is a three-time former finalist here at Indian Wells, winning in 20211 but beating Kerber en-route to the final two years later, whilst Kerber reached the final once but much more recently in 2019 when she finished runner-up to Bianca Andreescu.

Kerber has enjoyed the more eye-catching results so far, stunning 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in-between two great wins over Petra Martic and Veronika Kudermetova, but Wozniacki may have the better staying power after making her return last summer – with an astounding run to the round of 16 at the US Open a benchmark for this campaign. Notably, although equally inconsequential in this first match in over five years, Wozniacki won each of their last two encounters and she leads 6-5 on hardcourts to suggest backing the Dane to earn at least a set is the sensible way to lean. However, the wisest thing to do here is leave the match to its own devices.
