THE PREDICTION
Former number one Angelique Kerber conceded just three games to Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday to claim, at least by ranking, her most impressive win since her comeback this season. The 36-year-old was never at her best on clay, even during her peak years in and around 2016, but she has conceded just four games so far in Rome with the sort of enthusiasm she displayed in her brilliant run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells in March.
World number 113 Aliaksandra Sasnovich enjoyed an even more one-sided upset over 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova on Thursday, conceding just one game to the Russian to back-up a spotless campaign from qualifying. The 30-year-old is far better than her current deflated ranking suggests but this sudden burst of form is a surprise after spending much of the last two seasons in the wilderness. Sasnovich beat Kerber on clay at Roland-Garros two years ago, to reach the round of 16, but the German leads their head-to-head 2-1 with a victory at Wimbledon in 2021 and en-route to the Strasbourg Open title the following summer. Back Kerber to earn at least a set as the likelier of two rather unlikely potential last 16 entrants.
