Former world number one Andy Murray grabbed a satisfying spot of revenge on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Taro Daniel, who stunned him in the second round of last month’s Australian Open. The 34-year-old now faces another match with some extra significance behind it, also from Melbourne, as he takes on Roberto Bautista Agut for the first time since that fateful first round defeat at the Australian Open in 2019. After a five-set defeat to the Spaniard, a now infamous ‘goodbye’ video looked like the Brit was retiring from the sport but his tireless pursuit of recovery has brought him through to this moment as a regular, week-in-week-out touring player once again.
33-year-old Bautista Agut is yet to play in Doha, with his last match coming two weeks ago at the Montpellier Open in a three-set defeat to eventual champion Alexander Bublik. The world number 16 won the most recent of his nine ATP titles here in 2019 and he should be able to squeeze through this battle on form so far in 2022, although there is more than a little extra fate surrounding this one. Murray leads their head-to-head record 3-1, so taking RBA to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners seems the sensible move.
