THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Andy Murray exorcised some demons on court on Tuesday with a convincing straight-sets victory over Alexandre Muller. The 36-year-old is still eons away from his best ever level, and miles away from the top level he is still capable of producing, but the performance was an encouraging way to snap a six-match losing streak on tour. However, 18-year-old Jakub Mensik is a young player on the rise who will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 110th after stunning fifth-seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. The Czech took world number eight Hubert Hurkacz to five sets before defeat at the Australian Open last month to suggest this will be a lengthy battle on court, something Murray has been no stranger to in recent seasons, and he impressed on his Davis Cup debut late last season to prove a penchant for a big occasion.
It will be fascinating to see what version of Murray takes to court, with a few injury worries to counteract the elation of a much-needed win, but back Mensik to earn at least a set given his better start to 2024.
